Why Was Final Fantasy VII Remake Split into Three Parts? Director Explains the Difficult Decision
In 2025 at Brasil Game Show, the director defended splitting FFVII Remake into three parts—saying only then could they faithfully realize the full story with new technology.
At the 2025 Brasil Game Show, Square Enix’s game director Hamaguchi Naoki (浜口直樹/はまぐちなおき) addressed the planning for Final Fantasy VII Remake’s third installment and the trilogy as a whole. He explained the tough decision to divide the original into three parts:
“Final Fantasy VII has an immensely devoted fanbase. We could have compressed content to make it one single title—but the original fans would never forgive such omissions. To render the story fully using modern technology, it simply wasn’t feasible as a single game. That is precisely why we chose the difficult path of a three-part remake.”

During the stage interview, he also expressed confidence in the ending design of the third chapter:
“Of course, the conclusion of FFVII Remake Part III is already clearly plotted. That ending aims both to satisfy veterans of the original and to move newcomers who came in through the remake. I believe this new work will win the love of all players.”
About a year ago, Hamaguchi had teased that the third part would introduce some kind of twist to ensure it stands apart from its predecessors. Now, the time has come for fans to speculate where the story might go in Part III.
